2012 - the end or a beginning?Predictions of the end of the world have been with us as long a history itself. The latest revelation that 2012 could be the year of the apocalypse is just another speculation in human search for the power of foresight. Unfortunately that gift has always been elusive, not least in the world of business and government. Whether in seeking to predict stock market movements, the rise and fall of the Aussie Dollar or when elections will be called for State and Federal Governments, the variety of opinions, tips and insider knowledge that bombards us only adds to the confusion. Business decision making has always been subjected to lack of perfect knowledge and it will doubtless always be thus. Perhaps even more so since the GFC (which one might conjecture is more or less still with us) the world of business and Government has had to come to terms with operating in a continuous atmosphere of uncertainty and ambiguity. That doesn't mean decision making in a total vacuum, but rather needing to evaluate what information is available with a far greater analytical approach. When things are going well and success comes perhaps a little too easy, we tend to become a little lazy in our decision making discipline and revert to our old comfortable friend INTUITION. Unfortunately we often get too comfortable in that mode such that when the tough times roll around again - as they eventually do - our ability to kick in to that analytical focus is harder to achieve. That's why we should be continually developing our decision support mechanisms and tools. We shouldn't place ourselves in the position of having to begin business decision making from first principles each time we confront a problem or challenge. Having a good framework for gathering critical intelligence BEFORE it becomes urgent is half the battle of dealing with difficult circumstances. Finding time to research challenging questions when the time for resolution is already upon us is a difficulty all managers encounter. being better prepared from each experience is a goal to be desired. Now at the start of the new year, when things tend to be a little more quiet, is the time to consider how you can improve your capability to respond to the decision demands of 2012. Let Reinforcements help you with your decision support design and implementation needs.
